Savannah Trip Review - Part 2 - The Condo Life

Since this was a special occasion trip I decided to up the X Factor and go for a condo/apartment/vacation rental. I have had good luck renting apartments in the past and went to Trip Advisor to see what types of rentals were available in Savannah.I really wanted to be on the water so I decided on a (as described on Trip Advisor) a waterfront, jacuzzi, pet friendly condo.

I rented through the owner via Trip Advisor. The owner was quick to return my emails and I had a deposit on the place with in 24 hours.

About a month before our trip started the final payment was due and 5-7 days before leaving for Savannah we received an email from the owner with directions and how to access the condo/apartment.

There was absolutely no problem and or hassle in renting the condo.

Entry hall into the condo.

Walking towards the Living Room. The bedroom is on the right. You step up and there is not a door.

Nice kitchen with: microwave, oven, glasses, plates etc.

Living room looks towards the river. Nice lighting, but the ceiling is tin and a bit lower than normal.

Comfy couch.

The apartment is really nice with all the natural light, but is very dark at night. The owner did have night lights all around.

Putting the kettle on. There is coffee, assorted teas and sweeteners to get you started.

There is parking in the rear of the building (this is the view from the balcony). Be sure to watch the time or buy an all day pass if you are there during the week.

Partial view of the bridge from the balcony.

Large container ship going up the river. These go by often and are fun to watch.

As far as the apartment is concerned the living room, balcony, kitchen were wonderful. Nicely decorated and fully stocked.

The bathroom was quite large had tons of soft towels and had a separate tub and shower. Obviously I didn't love or hate it since I didn't take a photo of it!!!

The bedroom was a bit of a disappointment in that is was not a separate room. That's okay except the mattress on the bed tended to slope to the middle so it was not a really a good nights sleep. I am a really heavy sleeper, and I found it difficult to get comfortable. The bed reminded me of a Sheraton in Stockholm where the bed was obviously two singles pushed together. The hubby and I kept rolling into the middle. Funny now, but I don't remember laughing then!

So overall the condo was very nice. The only thing I could fault the owner on is the mattress.

Finding the condo was a bit of a challenge. As I stated above the owner did give us directions, and several different parking options. When you have never been somewhere before things at first are hard to digest. You are not sure where you are going or if you are in the right place. The GPS did help us along and we eventually found our way to the alley.

Yep, the alley.  Here's where I felt a bit disappointed and/or let down? Not sure which. We had to walk along a dark alley (there are lights for night time!) to find the front door.

Above: the alley.

Below: the front door to the condo.

Looking the other way down the alley.

These stairs are off Bay Street and they were the closes set to getting up to the main drag. I believe these may be referred to as the stairs of death? Just hold on!

I do have to say the condo is in a good location. It is very close to restaurants, the Chart House rrestaurant, the Hyatt Regency Savannah, and the Telfair Museum.

The back side of the condo is on River Street, and that was my biggest problem - noise. If you weren't woken by the street sweeper it was all the party people down on River Street. Just be forewarned if you stay here (and I'm not saying you shouldn't) just know if you aren't partying on River Street you will probably hear the partiers. Luckily the owner did have a white noise machine in the bedroom, and when I found it on the SECOND night or our trip - I slept much better!

The condo is in this building. See where the white car is on the left? Turn left, go between the car and the building and walk down the alley to the condo.

The condo is right past the green thing. Under the bridge.

Overall it was great being able to go back 'home' after a day of sightseeing and rest up for the evening. We bought snacks and adult beverages to enjoy in 'our' apartment as we watched the container ships glide by. I do find it funny that the container ships were quiet and we never heard them go by - we just happened to look up at the right time.

Savannah - Trip Review - Part 1

Where does one go to get away for a special weekend? Well if one live in the ATL I would assume Savannah would be top choice. I mean after all it's 'Savannah! Savannah! Savannah!' - goes the chorus of the local tourist board ads in magazines and twitter feeds.

I decided to check it out and did the usual: followed the Savannah CVB on Twitter @VisitSavannah, liked their FaceBook page, studied their website and requested a 2012 visitors guide (in July and didn't receive until October?).

I have to admit I was pumped up. Daily tweets from strangers of memories and longings to return jammed my Twitter feed every few minutes. Pictures of incredible sunsets and great times were posted on FaceBook daily. In fact when Savannah was mentioned at all by a local and/or a one time visitor on any of these social media sites I immediately pictured the poster leaning back as if they were sitting on a porch sipping a cocktail. Savannah is their friend. Their good friend and they wanted me to know that Savannah was special.

After having lived in the Atlanta area for almost three years I had never road tripped down to Savannah. So we piled in the car and made the four hour trip. Anticipation ran high. I was really banking on this being the place that made me really glad I was only four hours away - close enough to enjoy yet far enough to not take it for granted.

There are many facets to Savannah. You have your Paula Deen fanatics, the frat boys in town to party on River Street, and Girl Scouts making their pilgrimage to the home of their founder Juliette Gordon Low and you have people that just want to sing Moon River all day long (that would be me!).

So I was surprised, amused, never shocked and only a wee bit disappointed in my first trip to the Hostess City of the South.

I know I know. You want pictures. I did too. I couldn't put the camera down. If anything this is a photo op city. So here is my Savannah trip review Part 1. Yes, part one because I took THAT many pictures!

This is just walking down the main drag - Bay Street.

Savannah is made up of 20 plus squares.

The architectural styles are broad and amazing. At various time I felt as if I were in Europe or Old Town Virginia.

Many of these shots were taken during the Architectural Tour of Savannah - one of the highlights of our trip.
It was a great two hour tour and I highly recommend you check it out!

I loved the green color on this house.

Here I felt like I was in Old Town Virgina.

Someone told me Jones Street was the cutest. It is!

I loved the detail on this gate.

The trees really reach across the roads.

There is still a very British feel to this city at times.

The Spanish Moss hanging from the trees is amazing - even in the winter time.

Check back for part two - I will review a condo I rented plus lots of restaurants!

Downton Abbey! Are You Hooked???

Oh my! I hope the title of this blog post has caught your attention. If you are not a Downton Abbey fan then I must beg you to be come one! If you like English History, costume dramas, well rounded characters and Maggie Smith (she's just not Professor McGonagall after all!) this is for you!

I have long been a fan of British television. It doesn't really matter what the show is...if it is British then I like it. My obsession started as a kid as my parents and I gathered around the television to watch PBS Mystery. Inspector Morse was the one I remember liking the most, and the series has continued on with his partner Inspector Lewis. I have about five of Inspector Lewis on the DVR right now!

From there my tastes progressed: Keeping Up Appearances, Ab Fab, The Vicar of Dibley. Classics.

Then came along BBC America and You Tube where you can watch about any show you want. There were many many new ones to add to the list: The Office, East Enders, Coupling, and Monarch of the Glen.

Monarch of the Glen was a particular favorite. Set in the Highlands of Scotland what happens to a family when a man rejects his hereditary tittle of laird (lord) and would rather live in London and run a restaurant?

One of the characters of Monarch of the Glen was Lord Kilwillie - who was played by Julian Fellowes. Hmmm, does the name sound familiar. Not only a fantastic actor, Julian Fellowes is a writer that has brought us Gosford Park and you guessed it - Downton Abbey!

I am so excited that Downton Abbey has caught on in America. It is a beautiful piece of work that I look forward to every Sunday. Every morning when I switch on my computer I am amazed and delighted to see all the articles floating around out there about my favorite show.

In fact waiting for the second season to premiere here in the US has been torture. So much so I was afraid I was going to read some of those articles floating around out there and stumble across some spoilers.

Downton was every where. And I wanted it to be every where while I didn't want it to be every where!

Finally it was season two premiere day. I could hardly wait. I was dying. And  then I pulled into my local grocery store parking lot and saw this:

A Downton Abbey billboard! In fact there are pictures of Downton Abbey all over the city. Not just billboards, but at bus stops and on the side of buses.

Silly I know, but I loved it!

So are you a Downton Abbey fan? Are you cheering for Anna and Mr. Bates? Who do you hate more? O'Brien or Thomas? And does Edith drive (literally) you bonkers?

How about a British television fan? What is your favorite?

If you like Gosford Park and Downton Abbey I highly recommend Julian Fellowes novel Snobs. A delightful read!

Review - Rise and Dine

Last weekend the Jet Lagged Vagabond visited a little breakfast place in Emory Village called Rise and Dine. I had heard a lot about this place so I wanted to check it out for myself. And I was in the mood for some pancakes!

Rise and Dine in Emory Village. Not a lot of parking so be careful. I hear the CVS lot across the street will tow you.

Really cute yet simple interior.

Only twelve tables so get there early or be ready to wait. I waited 30 minutes on a Saturday morning.

Whimsical art work is everywhere.

Nutella and banana pancakes and a side of bacon.

Lox scramble with chicken sausage thrown in for good measure.

The overall experience was moderate. Good but not great. I will definitely go back again, but I am not planning on it right away!

Jet Lagged Vagabond Rating: Somewhat Jet Lagged *

*Jet Lagged Vagabond Rating System* - Always a work in progress!

Severely Jet Lagged:  Did Not Like
Somewhat Jet Lagged:  Okay but it lacked something
No Jet Lag Detected:  Wonderful Experience

Trip Review - Germany and OKTOBERFEST!

The Jet Lagged Vagabond has a friend from Chicago who travelled to Germany specifically to attend Oktoberfest. This is the real Oktoberfest. Not some local Mom & Pop place in your home town slapping down sausages while the Polka Band in the corner annoys you. This is the real deal. The real Germany. With real German beer. The authentic German experience!

Sadly, the Jet Lagged Vagabond has never been to Germany (it’s on the list), but I think it has moved up a notch from this trip report!

If you LOVE beer and even if you don’t check out her trip report and pictures below!

A city square in Frankfurt

Enjoying a glass of Frankfurt's famous apple wine!

The upscale town of Baden -Baden.

A super posh casino in Baden - Baden which is very popular. I wonder if James Bond has played a hand or two there?

The town of Bacharach - one of the many medieval towns along the Rhine River. I could insert a Burt Bacharach joke here but I won't.

The view of Bacharach from a Rhine River cruise. Best known for their Riesling and other sweet white wines, Bacharach has wine vineyards up and down all of the mountains as well as beautiful castles.

PRETZELS!!!  PRETZELS!!!
These tasty treats are found all over city centers and my Chicago friend declared, 'They are the best thing I have ever eaten!' All I want to know is - where is the beer? =)

Rotenburg - Our friend's favorite city of the trip.

A shot of Rotenburg from inside the city walls - I can see why it was her favorite city!

The night watchman of Rotenburg - he tours you around the entire city at night and tells you all about it's history and legends.

The entrance to Rotenburg from outside the city walls.

Munich! The home of OKTOBERFEST!

Hofbrau House Tent at Oktoberfest!

Inside the Lowenbrau tent.

BEER at Oktoberfest! Mmmmm...beer...
